Chaplain Ministries of Maui, or CMOM, held a soft opening on Monday where dozens gathered at 250 Waiehu Beach Road for a formal blessing of a new respite shelter that will soon be opening on Maui. CMOM officials said the new space will provide much-needed care for homeless individuals who are often overlooked. Lefale O Tehani Respite Shelter will provide medical care and enough beds for up to 20 men. CMOM started in 2019 as a non-profit to help homeless find housing. Over the years they have helped more than 1,000 people on Maui, Molokai and Oahu. CMOM received a grant last year to do respite planning which they say is a big need on Maui right now. They hope to have Lefale o Tehani Respite Shelter open by July.
