The Maui Police Department has unveiled its new night-vision helicopter. It’s MPD’s first chopper, and it comes with technology unlike any other in the state. A blessing was held on Thursday in Kahului to unveil “Hekili” which means thunder in Hawaiian. Law enforcement officials say the twin-engine with night-vision technology will take the county to new heights, enhancing surveillance, improve response times, deter and prevent crime, help with hostage, barricade, search and rescue and disaster response. Authorities also say it’s a vital asset for firefighting with enough power to do water drops in winds up to 50 miles per hour.
